My favorite blogging advice

Writing positive words can be very difficult in the blogging world. Blog burnout, harsh comments and negativity can make it easier to vent then to find the good in things. Last October, I went to the SITScation conference and heard some wonderful blogging advice. Can't wait to read yours....

"Every time you sit down to write or put your ideas out there in a post, remember that one day your grandchildren could be reading it."

This advice reminded me to think of the impact that I have. And I have the choice to be either negative or positive.

One day when I’m 80 and my children or grandchildren want to learn more about what their grandmother was like they'll just Google my name. What will they find and read about me? So I need to produce words that I don't mind them seeing. It's easy to press publish on a post without thinking about who it can affect. Keep this blogging advice in mind and it will become easier to be more positive in your posts. (Click here to order your own wedding time capsule.)

When I was in the fifth grade I remember our class putting together a time capsule. We filled it with pictures, stories of us and our hopes for the future. We buried it in the backyard of our school. We believed if someone from the future dug up our time capsule our existence would be everlasting.

But isn’t a Blog, or Twitter today’s current time capsule? These social media tools help stamp us into time. I just have to remember to choose this as I draft my post thoughts and tweets.

And to Molly and Billy, my future grandchildren, you found my blog and I hope you appreciate this advice. Please be kind to your parents and yes Grandma was young and had a lot of fun in San Francisco! See you just found the proof! Back to you lovelies, what is your favorite blogging advice you give to other newbies?

I worry if my future Grandkids read my blog. They'll think I'm a feckin eejit

I think it's okay to blog your feelings whether positive or negative, or to share things that are honest and raw, and maybe something you're not too proud of. From a reader's perspective it's refreshing to read about someone who is struggling just the same as anyone else and who is trying to get through it. And even if a person posts something on their blog they're not too proud of later on, it's still a thread to their being - an honesty about them - even if they end up not agreeing with their own words in the future. Things like that, I think, open a person up more to their readers, and I think readers appreciate that raw honesty. So if my grandchildren or children, even, came across my blog, they would see someone who wasn't perfect, or even trying to be perfect, all the time. But someone who was trying, all the same, to live her life for God and getting it wrong sometimes, just like any other human. With all that being said, I think it's okay to think in terms of "what if my grandchildren see this one day" because some people may just not want to share certain details of their lives on the internet. That, too, is completely understandable. I guess it really depends on the person blogging.

Don't feel pressured to post EVERY day. That is too stressful.
3-4 posts a week is good.
Too many giveaways overloads my brain.

And it is always good to remember that your prosterity could be reading this so keep it clean.

I am WAY tired so please forgive me if this doesn't make sense.

Nice blog!

Best thing is to speak from the heart... not to worry what everyone else is thinking! xxxoo

i already write as though my nephews and nieces may find it now - so I think i'm prety safe. they will probably find that i was self absorbed, overly worried and took too many pictures. *grin*

my best advice is always think what would your momma say if she read it?

That is so sweet... a note for Molly and Billy. :-)

I always take care of what I post and write because I know that my kids are reading my blog. I don't want them to cringe and hate me.

Great posting!
What I've noticed is that more and more bloggers think they're the only ones - too long postings.
Why not to post in parts? Make the story short and interesting and your audience will come back.

Comments. Less and less comments. SITS is trying but it's not working too well.
I've done exploring, left comments but never got comment back - which is, should be, the basic idea...
Or are there too many who want to be the leaders and they don't visit and comment other blogs anymore?

Is this today's attitude: oh, I post this today but I'm too busy to comment other blogs?
So we sit and wait others to do the job.

What do you think?

Wow! can't really believe I never gave this much thought... I am an avid tweeter and blogger and the thought that every tweet I've ever written will be read for generations to come is both heart warming and scary all at the same time! great post :)
