The five things that I must do next in life

For my birthday, I was given the book The List: 100 Ways to Shake Up Your Life, written by Gail Belsky. I thought this was a wonderful and inspirational birthday gift. It didn’t hurt that the attached birthday card said, ‘to the woman who inspires us.’ This is the kind of book you can’t wait to take home and look through. As my friends all sat around my birthday picnic, I opened the book and read excerpts out loud. My friends kept saying if you’ve done 30 of the 100 things on the list, you’re in good shape. ‘Only 30,’ I thought. I must be able to check off more than 30. Between you and me, I was only able to check 25 items off of the list.

Some of the things that I checked off included:

1) Witnessing childbirth. (I witnessed my half brother and half sister brought into this world. I am forever changed by the experience)
2) Switching careers/go back to school (Does going from child psychology to the world of advertising count?)
3) Riding in a fire truck (It was years ago. I was working with a class of children and I arranged a field trip to our local station. We all loved riding in the fire truck)
4) Lying about something… (I’d tell you, but then I’d have to… well you know)
5) Living with less (If you’re a follower of this blog, you know…)

After reading this book, things I want to do next include:

1) Visiting an Ashram…
2) Swimming with Sea Creatures… (Great Barrier Reef anyone?)
3) Having a child later in life… (I am looking forward to this one!)
4) Spending twenty-four hours in bed (Has anyone really done this?)
5) Writing a novel/build your own website (Ha Ha - look at me!)

The book ended by asking readers to create their own list. I’d love to know what the next five things on your list are? Go on, you can tell me… I won’t tell anyone (unless I’m fibbing)!

I've gone snorkeling in the bahamas so I get to check off swim with sea creatures. I highly recommend this.

I would go with: spend a day in a hammock, visit the rockies/ yellowstone, get a photography certificate, and see all my nieces and nephews grow up.

Spending 24 hours in bed sounds great, but I think only sick people ever get to do it.

What in the world is an ashram?

I'm pretty sure I've spent 24 hours in bed, in a very sloth-like mood haha.

I'm so getting this book now.
I need to know how many things I can cross off from the 'official book list' before I can come up with anything on my own.
Damn competitive spirit (portraying it really nicely. this once.)

OK, Let me check out this again. Five things I'd like to accomplsih in this life:

1. Witness childbirth. I had 3 children, but didn't get to witness any of them since I had caesarians. So maybe I'll get to witness a grandchild being born one day.

2. Make a big move. One of these days I want to move to a warmer climate. I've had enough of winter.

3. Spend 24 hours in bed (and I'm not counting times in the hospital) and I sure hope I'm not alone for that 24 hours!

4. Take a year off. Ah.... and travel and sleep late and not cook.

5. Conquer a fear. I have a deep-seated fear of heights. John wants to go parasailing at the beach.

Joanie: I love that you commented on this post twice. It's a great book do you have it? I promise to try to stay in bed all day long. Even when I was recovering from knee surgery I couldn't stay that still =)

Hey-ho! Wonderful post and I think I need to find that book.

I think I've spent 24 hours in bed on several occasions and I'm not even sick. :D

Thanks for dropping by my blog, by the way. I'll visit here from time to time. Yours is charming. ^_^

i live in cairns, jst ashore of the great barrier reef, i've been snorkelling with all sorts, giant clams are fun!

I've also slept for two days only waking up to eat, just because my body told me too. I love to try new things, i moved 1600klms away from the ones i loved to study animals and am moving back before christmas.

I went over to the uk for a month 2 years ago, and am goin to new zealand next year for a ski trip. I'm not gloating because i work hard to get what i get, but i feel like i could possibly be one of the luckiest people in the world to have such opportunities so close at hand and to have the support of those around me to make my dreams come true....
