I am so lucky to have Shannon from The Simply Luxurious Life guest post again. I've always had to remind myself that change is a blessing and this post is a wonderful example in pictures of how I'm feeling. We're driving a U-haul from San Francisco to Los Angeles today send positives thoughts...will post soon.
~ The Charm of Change
Life, our lives, are not stagnant. We are perpetually moving forward, although if we are absentmindedly sitting behind the wheel, we may not be going in a direction that is the best course for the lives of our dreams. The reality and the blessing is that change happens and it is a good thing, but it has to do with how we approach it.
Immediately I know some of you may be shaking your head, but look at it this way, as much as we want to convince ourselves that we are in control of our lives, we really only have control over our actions and reactions. The reality is that we create our reality based on what we believe, what we have experienced and how we think.
If nothing else, the realization that change will happen should be a reminder to us every day to soak up the goodness, be appreciative, live in the moment, not hold back and live as though tomorrow we will not have the same opportunity. Use the knowledge of change occurring on a regular basis to propel you to achieve your dreams, your goals, your deep-down-desires today – don’t put it off any longer. Allow this acceptance of change to be your great motivator. If not now, when?
Lastly, I would like to extend a tip of the hat to Laura for inviting me to contribute to her blog while she herself is undergoing a bit of an exciting change. Thank you again Laura, it is a true pleasure to be here.

An Ideal Weekend
Although the weekend is not quite here, it is always something to dream about, wish to come quicker or plan as we daydream about at our desks at work or in the car on the drive home or the subway/train ride commute. Last year in Vogue Italia Gisele Bundchen demonstrates the many ways a leisurely ideal weekend could be enjoyed. Have a look . . .
Sweetie it’s true! After living in the incredible city of San Francisco (click here for some old Cable Car Confession posts), we are moving back to Los Angeles for Honey's MBA program and a new lifestyle. I’m excited about moving back and looking forward to starting our new married life in L.A. I spent my high school years there with my family and best friend and they’re super excited we’re coming back. Getting married in San Francisco was the best thing we could have done as we met and fell in love here, but somehow moving to L.A. has been clicking left and right.
So three months to the day of our wedding, we’ll be in a Uhaul moving cities.
This will bring exciting change to Under the Sheets~shhh because my experiences will be new. New lifestyle, beachy weather, MBA students, travel, closer to family and we’re renting a sweet little house. I promise sweetie to bring to L.A. my retro, vintage, inspirational, witty writing and San Francisco style. I guess I’ll just have to leave all of my scarves in boxes.
Stay tuned for my/our new adventures in L.A. and I can’t wait to meet some new blogging friends.

Time for some coffee talk...it's been one of those weeks where my lifetwisted and turned. And sweetie I'd love for you to send some positive vibes over my way. Under the Sheets~shhh is there in times of good and ready to catch me if I fall.
Why do I blog?
I've been asked this question many times when I proudly talk about my little blog. At what point did I feel the need to share all of my thoughts with the world? My blanket includes every comment that I get, every picture I take and every thought for a post.

It seems when I 'm on a road something happens and I have to change my way. I seem to always land on my feet and can see later on see why the road has changed by a move or change of job. What advice would you give someone to keep their chin held up high ?

I was recently contacted by the lovely fashion blog Be In Style to see if I'd like them to review my blog. What a lovely compliment sweetie! And then I was flattered by their review of how I see things in my little corner of the world, San Francisco. Be In Style is all things fashion, deals, trends and some gossip, but it's all class and lovely things.
Review ~ Laura, the blogger for Under the Sheets~shhh, lives in charming San Francisco, California. She blogs about everything from Grace Kelly’s wedding dress (over thirty seamstresses worked on her incredible gown!) to outfits for 80’s-style workouts. One of her most recent posts is about a trip to Tuscany and Rome. She makes these romantic Italian places seem like the one and only place any fashion-lover would want to live!...When you get a chance head over and check out the review. ~ Let me know what you think sweetie!
I wrote a post back in September called, Should I change my name after marriage? I loved all of your comments as they were diverse and candid. Just the way I like comments! What I learned is there really are no rules in needing to change your name for marriage. It's all about personal preference.
And as long as you think out of the box then why not behave the same way about this name changing tradition?
I've known my Honey for five years (1 1/2 as friends and then 3 1/2 years as a couple) so I've had plenty of time to think about this. And yes I doodled on my notebook what my married name would look like countless times. And over the years Honey and I have discussed our feelings about my name change. And neither of us were set either way.
One day Honey made the suggestion that I take his last name as my middle name so I have a double-barrelled last name. For me this is the best of both worlds. For now I can keep my last name for work and google searches, but can be Mrs. Honey as well. His suggestion just felt right and we moved forward with the change the day we got our marriage license.
So I did change my name for marriage, but in my 'out of the box' way that works for me/us.
Here are some of my favorite post comments that really stood out:
Lost of comments on this one. You have a lot to think about. I am getting married in a few weeks and am so excited to change my name. It is weird to think that my children and people I meet in the future will only know me by my husband's last name. That the name that is my identity will slowly disappear. I plan to keep it around a little on magazine subscriptions or library cards. I am changing it because its a tradition and if you are doing the tradition of getting married I think you should go all the way with it. I want to be announced that day as Mr and Mrs. I also feel like changing my name is putting trust in my husband to take care of me and our future children. Be the head of the household. Good luck!
I took my husband's name. It meant so much to him and it really made me feel like a "wife" and part of a whole new team identity. Our children have my maiden name as their middle name, keeping it alive!
Sarah said...
You do realize that your children are not required to have your husband's last name, right? They can have yours just as easily. Heck, make one up for them if you want.
Also, I grew up with a different name than my mother (she remarried when I was five, but I didn't change my name). Guess what? It was no big deal. Ever. No one ever got confused or thought that she wasn't really my mom. Maybe fifty years ago it would have seemed odd, but it certainly doesn't now.
If you don't want to change your last name, but want your children to have yours, then give them yours. If you don't want to change your last name, but want the kids to have Daddy's name, then let them have it and don't worry about it. If you want a new name but don't want to fall into the patriarchal trap of being known only by your husband's name, come up with a new name for the whole family and make your husband go through the whole name-changing mess with you. Think outside the box! You're not limited to your grandmother's traditions. ~ So what are your thoughts about changing your name for marriage? Out of the three comments, which do you relate to the most?
There's always been something really lovely about mister Emerald Dandy and I am proud to say he has become one of my blogging friends. If you haven't seen his Seattle blog then please check it out soon. He has such a wonderful and fresh way of seeing the world. And he wanted to share with you his love story. Take it away ED...
~
It all begins when I had first moved into my building nearly 2 years ago. I was busy unloading my car of my boxes and hiking them up the stairs, when I was startled by a man and his dog. The dog gave a little bark which set off my nerves, but the man himself was truly stunning. I was excited to move into my apartment, knowing that there was at least "one" attractive gentleman in the building.
Without too much work I was able to see that this man lived in our courtyard (which I had to walk past everyday to reach my apartment), with another man... most likely his boyfriend. It didn't stop me from always trying to catch a glimpse of this gorgeous man; I always hoped he'd see me, but I never seemed lucky enough. After about 6 months I switched to a different apartment in the building, so my daily hunt ended.
I didn't think too much of it, until I discovered that one of my close friends was moving into HIS apartment. Apparently, he had broken up with his boyfriend, and the boyfriend had moved back to Texas. He no longer needed that apartment, so he moved into something smaller within the building. I had no idea where he had moved, but liked the idea that he was still here (AND single!)
After a night out with friends and talking about boys, I was dared to somehow strike up a conversation with my apartment-crush. Since I hadn't seen him in awhile and hadn't a clue where he lived, I tried something borderline stalker-ish. I scribbled a quick note on a napkin which said "Hey, I think you're cute. Would love to hang out with you some time. Xoxo, your secret admirer." and left it on his car parked in the garage. I'm not sure what I was thinking, as this was a large complex and trying to figure out who his secret admirer would have been similar to finding a needle in a haystack.
Since my note was general, I attempted by writing another. This time I left my name, apartment, and phone number. I couldn't believe I went through with this, but I figured what the hell?! Within a few days I received a text from him, and before you know it we were chatting.
For two weeks we were texting back and forth so I finally said "So are we ever going to actually meet, or continue to play this game?" and he responded by setting a date. Simple and easy, a BBQ date up on the roof. I was a little nervous, but was excited to meet him. I didn't actually think I stood a chance with him, but was stoked to see what would happen.
The evening of our "date" was perfect timing for me. I had just ended a disastrous friendship/relationship so I was excited for some type of distraction. I'll never forget when Chace and I actually met. I opened the door to the rooftop, and there he was. The look on his face was priceless... it was as if I stopped him dead in his tracks.
The first date was slightly awkward, as first dates tend to be. I quickly discovered why he had initially reacted the way he had. Turns out I wasn't the only one that was doing some "stalking."
While Chace was living in the courtyard, he remembered seeing this cute guy walk by, and hoped to get his attention, but ended up unsuccessful. One night while he was out walking his dog he glanced up at his building and noticed this guy wearing nothing but a towel; he had just discovered where the boy lived and was intrigued. While he was in his apartment he was always hoping to catch a glimpse of the boy walking past the courtyard, and while he was walking his dog he hoped to see him in his apartment. Suddenly, the boy had moved away, and he had figured his fantasy was over.
Boy was he wrong, because he was having a BBQ with that same boy! The date went well and we've been together ever since!
My blogging friend Joanie from Joanie's Random Ramblings has always been a huge supporter of Under the Sheets~shhh and I look forward to getting her comments. So I was excited to have her guest post about her love story "Happiness after 50". Take it away Joanie... ~ This is the story of John and how we met, quite by accident.... on the internet.
As you may know, I found myself suddenly single at the age of 49. I never, in my wildest dreams, imagine I'd be single again. Widowed maybe but not divorced! That happened to other people. Apparently I am other people.
I joined several online dating sites... match.com, yahoo personals, etc. EHarmony said I needed to be legally divorced to join. I met a few guys and found almost all of them to be married, ick! There were a few I chatted with for months and month and no meeting. This went on for about a year and a half. And I'll admit I wasn't the most sane person at the time. Desperate for affection, hoping to find someone to love again, I met some real winners!
I was just resigning myself to a life of solitude and living alone when I found this site called True Beginnings. I can't even tell you how I found it, if it was via email or an ad on a game site or whatever. It offered 3 days free, so I figured what the hell, I'll fill in the blanks and see what happens. I put up a real picture of myself and was very honest about me. Once or twice a week, true would send me an email with 12 guys who matched my criteria. I never ever made the first move! I'm way too insecure for that!!
One day, a month or so after I joined, I get an email from a guy who lives on the other side of the county. His message basically said "Hi! Thanks for the wink!" huh???? I didn't send anyone a wink! I'm too shy for that! So I look at his profile and thought that he seemed harmless looking in a grandfatherly sort of way and I respond with "Well, I didn't send a wink, but hi!" We exchanged info about ourselves. I'm 4th of 8 kids, he's 4th of 7 kids. He went to Catholic schools, so did I. He's a row house kid from Philly, I'm a row house kid from just outside the city.
We emailed back and forth for a few weeks and tried to get in a private chat room to talk and we couldn't figure out how to do it, so he gave me his phone number. I finally called him one evening. We were on the phone for more than 3 hours that night and an hour and half the next 2 times we talked! I learned a lot about him and he was quite honest about himself. John told me he was in the Army for 20 years, is now retired and working at a chemical company as a security guard and tutors kids in the evening in math and science. Then he told me he'd been married 4 times! I have no idea why I didn't hang up the phone right then and there! Was I that desperate? I was certainly interested!
We decided to meet, and he came to my work. We went to dinner and saw a movie and we really hit it off! I felt so comfortable with him! I'm happier now than I've been in many years. We've been together for 2 1/2 years now and we plan to stay together for the rest of our lives.
I don't know if we'll ever get married. John wants to get married but I don't want to, at least not yet! I promised John I'd marry him for his 63rd birthday! So that's our story and I'm sticking to it and thank you for letting me share with you.
Thank you Brandi for guest posting today and I am proud to call you a blogging friend. I love your pictures, honesty and pictures on your blog. And I also love getting your comments and feedback. We are ready for you to share your bliss with us. Take it away Brandi! ~ Hi everyone! I’m Brandi from Not Your Average Ordinary and I’m so honored to be guest posting for Laura while she’s off on her honeymoon. I thought I’d tell you all a little about my love story.
My boyfriend M and I met in Astrophysics class. (Yes, we are that geeky.) He was working on his Masters in teaching; I was finishing up a second Bachelors degree.
I never expected to fall in love. At that point in my life, I had begun to believe that “being in love” with someone was something I’d only know in movies and books. I thought it was one giant mass hallucination. M proved me so wrong.
We’re currently in a long distance relationship: he’s on the East Coast, I’m on the West Coast. There’s 2,776 miles between us. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
Last August, we drove that distance together, and I discovered not only America but how much he had changed me. I learned that even though what you do in your life is important, who you do it with means so very much.
What lessons has love taught you?

Introducing Miss Joanie who is going to guest post for us. I love how real Joanie is with her words and thoughts. I always feel like I know her and can imagine her stories. When she read that I was looking for "calling all love stories" while I'm away on my Honeymoon and she sent this right over. Thanx Joanie! ~ Have I mentioned that John and I met on the internet? Well, we sure did! When my marriage broke up, I was a little bit insane. I was married 23 years and we were together a total of 27 years. I didn't know how to NOT be married. Some months after the break-up, when I was finally convinced that he wasn't going to "come to his senses and come home", I started joining online dating services hoping to meet someone. I met a few guys and I'm surprised I didn't join a convent!
I was resigning myself to spending the rest of my life alone. Then one day I ended up on this site, I found this one called True Beginnings. John and I exchange info about ourselves over the course of the next couple of weeks and we learn that we have so much in common it's scary! He's 4th of 7 kids, raised Catholic in Philly, graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1971. I'm 4th of 8 kids, raised Catholic in the suburbs of Philly and graduated from Cardinal O'Hara High School in 1973. He's retired military, 3 of my 4 brothers, my sister's husband and my nephew are all military, 3 of whom made careers in the Army and Marines. I have 2 girls, 1 boy; he has 2 boys, 1 girl, neither of us has grandchildren yet. The similarities just kept coming and coming.
We finally decided it was time to meet in person. So I told him where I worked as a waitress. So one Saturday, the hostess comes up and says you have a request and there he is!! John sat in my section and ordered food and asked me to go dinner and a movie with him.
Did I mention that I broke all the rules with him? First, I told him where I work. Then, I allowed him to follow me home so I can get changed. I gave him a Diet Coke and I went upstairs to take a shower!!! So we go to Red Lobster and then a movie afterwards (we saw The Night Talker with Robin Williams). Afterwards, we went back to my place and he comes in and we watched a movie (V For Vendetta). This is where I made a BIG mistake.... I should have known better to introduce my teenager to my new "friend". And it didn't help much that she caught us smooching. If I had to do it all over again, I'd have kept John out of the house for a while before introducing them. Although I have a feeling it wouldn't have made a difference.
We have a lot in common and we also have many differences. He thinks the Catholic Church should still be saying Mass in Latin, I don't agree. I was in a bowling league for years, I like to play cards, he plays Dungeons and Dragons and Chess.
So there you have it! John and I have been together since August of 2006. We had some challenges, like when he was diagnosed with cancer less than a year after we met and I told him I wasn't going to leave him. And dealing with my youngest child not liking him. I had a cervical cancer scare (I didn't have it, thank God!) before he had his cancer and he stood by me.
I'm not sure if we'll ever get married, and it's me dragging my feet. I don't want to lose my spousal support (that's what they call alimony in PA) and I get it until Dec 2014 and I earned every single penny of that money! And I also discovered I'll be eligible for my ex's social security if I don't remarry before I turn 60 (which will be 9 months after my support ends), and my ex makes a LOT more money than either of us do! My not wanting to get married really surprised me! I was DESPERATE to be married, yet when the possibility arose, I said no way! Go figure.
What a doll Red Vines for Breakfast is and what a cute name! She contacted me with lovely things to say and wanted to share her love story with us. I love learning about how people met and find their mate and on today the day of Honey and my wedding, I thought this post to be perfect! Enjoy sweeties... ~ Take it away Red Vines for Breakfast: I was 20 years old and a college junior on Spring break in Cabo San Lucas Mexico with all my girlfriends. A few of us split up for the day and some of my girlfriends met some guys from Colorado at the beach while I was spending the day walking around town. Well, one of my girlfriends was interested in one of these CO guys and we decided to meet up with them later that night for a drink. We walked into the restaurant and I was immediately drawn to one of them and chatted with him all evening. We had so much in common and I remember laughing until my stomach hurt from his infectious sense of humor. His smile lit up the room and we had so much fun together.
He called my hotel room the next day and wanted to hang out again. So for the rest of our trip, my friends and his friends continued to spend time together- on the beach, getting happy hour drinks, lunches at The Office, etc. Before leaving to return to Los Angeles, I said my goodbyes thinking I'd never see him again. I mean, he lived in Colorado and was 26 (what I thought was too old for me at the time). He did ask for my home phone number before leaving and when I returned home he called all the time! I really liked him but I didn't understand what he wanted to come of this. Soon after, he came to visit LA to interview for a job and we had our first real date. It was perfect, but I got the distinct feeling that he was interested in getting married and having kids soon (although I realize I was way off on that) and I officially decided he was too old for me and we lost touch for a while. I moved to San Francisco after graduating and he moved to Los Angeles to take the job for which he had been interviewing. I thought of him fondly from time to time, but never expected to see him again.
More time passed and I eventually moved back to LA. Five years after our initial meeting on Spring break, I ran into him at a happy hour in Venice Beach! We were both single at the time and things just progressed smoothly from there. Now we've been together for 5 years and married for 2 and things couldn't be more wonderful. Sometimes we still cannot believe that we met on Spring Break in Cabo and 10 years later we're happily married. ~ Lovelies here is my fav wedding day movie quote, "And he's this completely wonderful, wonderful, amazing man, and...well, we starting seeing each other, a lot...and, um...we fell in love. Ha! Ha! It actually happened! And, uh, we've decided to get married...which means that, I'm engaged! Ha! I'm engaged! I'm getting married!" (Father of the Bride) ~Laura
The lovely and talented Bride Chic was kind enough to guest post for us lovelies. Have you been to her blog? She founded the The Design Project of San Francisco, a networking organization of fashion professionals collaborating their skills and talents on projects. And she's been a wonderful supporter of Under the Sheets~shhh. Take it away Amy-Jo. ~ Claudette Colbert as Ellie Andrews, Audrey Hepburn as Jo Stockton. No, they weren't real brides but the designers, writers and producers who created them certainly were. Hollywood designers and the actresses who wore their creations influenced the way we look at weddings and fashion today. All the gowns pictured here are works of art and stellar representatives of their times. What could be more 1930s than Robert Kalloch's creation for Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night? The body-hugging bias cut was still a new, even radical concept in 1934, especially for a wedding gown. During this golden era, it was not Paris anymore as much as Hollywood that decreed fashion. This simple satin gown with florals surrounding the neckline could be found today in a few designer collections. The look has become timeless. Attached to the cap head piece you'll see miles of chiffon netting, a light and airy fabric the designer chose because in this story, Colbert needs to become the runaway bride once she decides Clark Gable is the one. As she runs, the veil, long as it is, lifts and floats beautifully off the ground to produce a kind of 'bride in flight' look.
sourceThe Givenchy on Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face has become a favorite for brides of every decade. When clients bring in inspiration photos so I can get an idea of what they want in a gown, this photo is pulled out often. And sometimes it is not the exact same dress a bride wants so much as 'the look' it evokes, the epitome of pure, flawless design.
source Above is one of the purest, most traditional wedding designs out there (the other is princess Grace's--also by a Hollywood designer, Helen Rose). I'm glad I finally found this image of Julie Andrews in Dorothy Jeakins shantung wedding gown. It's from one of the most beautiful movies ever made, The Sound of Music. Raised in an abbey by cloistered nuns, when Maria marries Captain Von Trapp she marches down the aisle alone. This really touched me when I first saw this movie as a kid. So much so that when my own day came to meet my intended and take my vows, I too walked alone and gave myself away.
The gown Elizabeth Taylor is wearing was standard for its time. Post war, the world celebrated lifts on fabric restrictions by using vast amounts of it in skirts. Bridal gowns were the ultimate show-off the hourglass shape vehicle. The MGM release of Father of the Bride coincided with Taylor's own real, life nuptials with hotel heir, Nicky Hilton. Both her own and fictional wedding gown was designed by Helen Rose.
Below right is Carrie Bradshaw's Ivory silk taffeta confection. It's actually one of the finale pieces from Vivienne Westwood's 2007 "Wake Up Cave Girl" Collection. Hand picked by Sex in the City stylist, Patricia Field, personally, I was surprised Sara Jessica didn't rate a custom designed gown for her role in the film. I mean heck! Check out Audrey Hepburn. Didn't she have that one-of-a-kind-designed-to-fit-her-character Givenchy tulle wedding dress? The suit on the left would have been my choice . . . but . . .ultimately it was Carrie's as well. sourcesource

There are so many 'must see' movies for brides who want to gather ideas. Some are golden oldies, others like Sex in the City are still less than a year old. All are romantic, all are incredibly inspiring . . . . Most below are out on video or disc/DVD. Watch your favorite and listen to the commentary if there is one--you'll learn so much.

With another rainy San Francisco Monday, I felt like I needed a little color. And I love these retro editorial pics to cheer me up. Sweetie, I still haven't figure out how I can pose like these lovely models throughout the day, but I promise to try if you do?
Is she looking for more pink balloons or being careful not to pop them with her fabulous shoes?
Love these editorial shots by Amanda Elkins a L.A. photographer. Amanda has a fresh way of capturing her subjects and I love her use of light. Great job Amanda!
Stunning...just stunning. All of the blues work together with the drama of her draped dress. How many people do you think it took to help her get dressed?
This ballet-esque bride shows off her elegance, grace and unique style while posing on the ground.
I am very into balloons today! Ah rain, rain go away and come again another day in June please!

She has an incredible eye for lovely photography and is my new blog crush. Tell me sweetie what do you do to cheer yourself up when its pouring outside?
It's been almost two years, that I secretly started writing this blog. Under the Sheets~shhh was my secret and I thought I would never share it with anyone. I am so glad I was able to let go, feel confidant in my words and share. And so many wonderful things have happened because of it. Then one day I was given the best blog advice ever! "Your blog will become successful only when you start to eat breathe and live it!" This became my blogging words to live by.
How does working on your side project of writing consume you?
Do I like giving myself homework? Well no, but I love the feeling of creativity that this blog gives me. I actually feel like something is missing if my posts aren't done. And whenever I see a scenario that makes me say out loud, "that would make a great post" I know I am truly done for.
I wonder what's happened to me? Suddenly I see life in colorful words. For example I was talking to my brother in Toronto and he told me about an amazing restaurant they just had dinner at called O.Noir. "Dining in the Dark, when you eat food in the dark, your remaining senses are heightened to savor the smell and taste of food." And my first response to him was, "What an amazing concept. How should I write about it?"
I guess only bloggers can understand how my life and my art has combined so seamlessly that I am starting to lose the line.
And where did I go to learn my new blogging craft. I would read a lot of articles about social media, read other blogs that I admired and Honey would send me posts by Seth Godin.
My blogging advice I'd like to pass to you is to network as much as you can. Develop relationships with other blogs so you and your community will continue to grow. Well at least that's what happened to me lovelies!
